Plus I attempted to migrate my Altiris Deployment Server with it's 400 Gigs of PC images yesterday. Oh, I would love to have the IOPS to migrate all the VMs to one SAN, do it's firmware, then migrate them all to the other SAN but I would not make it through my backup cycle and I would have to turn off replication for that entire time. It will be a good document to leave behind for my replacement because this crap is going to give me a heart attack.

:) He and I are building a list of what needs to happen and when for a total system shutdown and restart. I am pretty good but damn I cant do everything. I've got a consultant I use from time to time. The extra hours are a tribute to Scotty from the Enterprise. That's approximately 6 hours so I am getting 8.

I figure 1-2 hours to do a proper shut down, 2-3 more to patch all the 4 SANs firmware then 1-2 to get all the servers back up. No way, seems Equallogic has gotten all the way to version 5.2.2 and still no way to clean up these dirty blocks. I deleted it and patiently waited for the Equallogic to drop down from 13TB in use to maybe 8 or 9. So, I found the backups, all of them since July. I am like no way, I just built that box, populated it with 8TB and should have like 6-7TB left on that 15TB volume. So, I am looking at it the other day and see 13TB in use. I got it all working fine a few months ago but forgot the step to delete old backups.

My dumb ass did not check the SQL Server maintenance plan close enough. Long explanation but a little backgroud sometimes helps and the help desk phone aint ringing right now. Cant VM a thousand dollar modem with 12 ports that records your voice. It has 2 physicals and about 7 VMs to get it to work. Like the Dictation/Speech Rec/Transcription/Medical Records system. There is this typical complicated interaction between the servers that I am sure we all share where some physicals work with some VMs to provide total packages. So, with the exception of about 6 physical servers all of my machines are VM-ed. I know replicated volumes are not really backups. I also have traditional backups via a Unitrends device. Those 2 SANs replicate to the off-site CoLo to 2 identical SANs. We created 2 storage pools, one called Fast and the other called Slow. One with 24 - 10K RPM - 900 Gig drives and the second one with 12 - 7.2K RPM - 3TB drives. We have 2 Equallogic PS4100s in the main server room. Basically, we have to get down time to do this. :) I am getting back on the line with my Dell support tech later today. Most enterprise storage SANs (including Compellent from Dell) support Zero page reclaim, where just writing zero's in the OS reclaims space on the backend.

The other problem here is that Server 2012 is the first windows OS to natively support sending UNMAP commands back to the array (EXT4 supports it with an added option when you do the mount).

In January I'm ripping out some old 4100 series and I'll see if I can steal one to the lab to benchmark this. You know, maybe we can get one of the Dell guys on here to find us some benchmarks/best practices on doing it.

I've done some fairly intensive deep dives into SCSI UNMAP, but EqualLogic is the one vendor I don't have experience with on it. In my testing with half a dozen arrays I've seen some nasty performance and controller issues with UNMAP in some cases basically melting controllers.

Kooler, I have a windows based UNMAP generator tool, if you have an RDM it should work. Just wondering if any of you have experience with this stuff. I did find this release, http:/ / en./ dell-blogs/ software/ b/ software/ archive/ 2012/ 06/ 11/ dell-announces-equallogic-software-updates.aspx which says it will work. Does this sound reasonable to you storage gurus? Dell tech said move from SAN firmware 5.2.2 to 6.0.something and you will now have the ability to reclaim the space and it will automagically happen. Long lead in, I know, now for the question. More importantly found out that our SANs dont support it and once the blocks are dirty you cant get them back. :)Ĭalled Dell and found out that this is called re-thinning or unmapping. Did a bunch of reading on the web but was not sure what to call it so did not find much there either. Then you delete a TB or 2 you never see a corresponding drop in the volume back on the Equallogic SAN.Ĭould not believe this at first, waited one night to see if some sort of clean-up job would reclaim the space. So, if you allow the space used in the OS to climb, say to 10 TB. As many of you have probably seen the space used by the OS never gets cleaned up. Had to do a direct Mapped RAW LUN and let Windows 2008 see it as one large disk. Hello All, I have an Equallogic PS4100 with a large volume.
